EMDR is an innovative therapy that helps people reduce the occurrence of flashbacks, nightmares and negative thoughts through bi-lateral stimulation of the body using eye movements, sounds or touch. EMDR has been used with great success with people suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and is one of two treatments recommended for this by the UK’s Dept of Health. EMDR is usually a highly effective way of working with trauma that does not involve a lot of talking therapy, although a person may experience high levels of emotion at certain points during the treatment. Research has shown that EMDR is an effective treatment for traumatic symptoms whether caused by road or rail accidents, combat injuries, assaults or severe mistreatment in childhood.
